- ➤ Before today, the Hawaii Foodbank held a Saturday distribution at Keehi Lagoon Memorial Park that fed 500 households of federal workers and families impacted by the government shutdown. Today, food is available at Leeward Community College from 8 a.m. to noon for 1,000 households and on Monday at Waipio Soccer Complex from 9 to 11 a.m. — registration is required at each event. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The University of Hawaii at Hilo received $15M in capital improvement funding last week—money that will allow campus staff to start maintenance, design and renovation projects—including upgrades to student housing and air-conditioning. Hawaii Tribune-Herald
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ An Oahu family with parents working without pay was evicted in late October because the federal shutdown left them without income—officials at the Mediation Center of the Pacific expect more evictions as the government remains closed. Honolulu Star-Advertiser
- ➤ The FAA began a phased reduction in air traffic at Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport amid a continuing federal shutdown, with cuts rising to 10% by November 14. Hawaii DOT is securing emergency funding for FAA controllers and TSA screeners and warns the cuts may disrupt travel, cargo shipments, and tourism — vital to the islands. Hawaii Tribune-Herald
- ➤ Hawaii Department of Human Services officials said today that they have not received reports of widespread issues with SNAP EBT transactions after federal food aid was released Friday morning — they stressed that monitoring continues as a U.S. Supreme Court two-day stay could affect funds while the $250 HEFAP benefit becomes active on Monday.
