  • The AFP Aloha Chapter will host National Philanthropy Day on November 14th at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel to honor community leaders and organizations that strengthen Hawai‘i’s nonprofit work.   • Kamehameha Schools sold its remaining interest in the land under the Royal Hawaiian Hotel for $510 million to Japan-based Daisho Co on November 6—Kyo-ya Hotels & Resorts will keep running the hotel through a long-term lease as the sale supports the school’s mission to help Native Hawaiian communities.  KITV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new affordability survey shows 75% of local workers may leave or are unsure if they will stay amid high housing costs and wage challenges, and nearly 3 out of 4 say it is hard to save money. Holomua Collective will make changes in local housing and wages—steps it says will help keep the workforce in Hawaii.  Hawaii Free Press
  • Many SNAP recipients in Alaska and Hawaii are worried about delayed benefits and rising food prices, which has forced some to ration food and skip essential items — state officials have infused funds into food banks in Hawaii while Alaskan residents continue to face uncertainty. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs launched a $6M relief fund that lets Native Hawaiian families apply for emergency food assistance in the form of grocery gift cards and checks—this program serves to support eligible households in need—.  KITV
  • Hawaii’s Department of Human Resources Development will host an Operation Hire Hawaii recruitment event in Wahiawa on November 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—22 state agencies will seek qualified candidates for public service roles. More than 7,000 applications have been received since February and online rapid hiring interviews for key positions are underway.  KITV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local healthcare leaders are joining forces with community groups to boost access to care by investing in affordable housing, fresh local food, dental outreach, and training for future health professionals. Hawai‘i Pacific Health, One Kalakaua Senior Living, and Hawaii Dental Service are rolling out programs—over 900 affordable homes are in development and community events are planned—to strengthen care across the islands.  Hawaii Business
