COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kaiser Permanente gave a $50K grant to U.S. VETS Hawaii to expand housing and supportive services for homeless and at-risk veterans and their families on Oahu. The grant supports ongoing efforts—under the Build for Zero initiative—to provide veterans with stable homes and essential care.  KITV
  • A Veterans Day sunset ceremony was held on Nov. 11 on the USS Missouri at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor where Medal of Honor recipient Alan Kellogg and 101-year-old veteran John Gleeson were honored. Admiral Steve Koehler gave the keynote address as a bagpiper played Amazing Grace and Sounds of Aloha sang the Star Spangled Banner.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Hawaii Food and Wine Festival has raised over $5 million for education and sustainability — it brought together culinary masters and future chefs to share their expertise and passion for food.  KITV
  • The Honolulu Museum of Art opened the Let Trade Winds Flow exhibit on November 7 and it is on view until March 8—showcasing how breeze blocks have shaped local architecture through island photography—museum visitors can buy a limited-edition aloha shirt and a keiki tee in the gift shop.  Honolulu Magazine

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Electric vehicle use in Hawaii has grown with about 40,000 registered EVs and fewer than 1,000 public chargers available, leaving drivers like Uber’s Rosie Ramirez waiting long times for a charge; the state is planning to expand the network to over 2,400 stations by 2030—though funding and technical challenges slow progress. Local officials stress that improving convenience will be key to encouraging more drivers to switch to electric vehicles.  KITV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • DLNR's State Historic Preservation Division began updating the statewide preservation plan — which will guide efforts for Hawaiʻi's historic sites through 2034 and be finalized in 2026 — and invites community members to share their ideas via an online survey and virtual focus groups from November 17 to December 5.  Hawaii Free Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • ByHeart Inc. recalled select batches of its Whole Nutrition Infant Formula that may contain Clostridium botulinum—Hawaii DOH urges parents to stop using the product immediately and seek medical help if their baby shows symptoms such as poor feeding or weak cry—while the FDA investigates the contamination.  KITV
  • On November 10, WCCC hosted a Mental Health Day event at Olomana Cottage where over 60 inmates took part in talent shows, sports, and educational sessions on mental health topics. Officials including Director Tommy Johnson and Warden Ione Guillonta attended the event—showing the facility’s commitment to inmate rehabilitation.  Hawaii Free Press

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • HONOLULU Restaurant Week is now underway at Foodland with more than 60 restaurants participating — four of which are located inside Foodland stores; the top picks include steak frites, a local tomato dish, a whiskey tasting experience, a chicken caesar sando, and whole Dungeness crab. The event runs through Nov. 16 as local eateries offer menus that match the store’s regional flavor.  Honolulu Magazine

  • The University of Hawaii men’s basketball team is set to tip off the 59th OUTRIGGER Rainbow Classic today at 7 p.m. against Mississippi Valley State at the Stan Sheriff Center—seeking to win back-to-back tournaments for the first time since the early 2000s.  Hawaii News Now
