COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Goodwill Hawaii is experiencing rising customer demand but fewer donations as shoppers depend on its affordable goods, with CEO Katy Chen noting that clothing and linens are in short supply even as numbers at stores on Oahu and elsewhere climb—this drop is concerning ahead of the peak donation period through New Year’s Day. The organization also received $1 million from the Legislature and held a strong Goods Giving Saturday drive to support its growing job training and education programs.  Hawaii Tribune-Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ticket request forms for the Merrie Monarch Festival will be accepted starting Monday, Dec. 1; the event is set for April 5-11. People may request up to two tickets and must mail their form with a cashier’s check or money order to the festival office at 865 Piilani Street, Hilo—international requests will be chosen by lottery.  Hawaii News Now
  • Pacific Historic Parks will hold a week of free commemorative events at Pearl Harbor to mark the 84th anniversary of the Dec. 7th attack, featuring a Rosie the Riveter signing, a USS Utah Memorial sunset ceremony, and a National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day commemoration to honor over 2,400 Americans who died. Some services will be live streamed and include limited bus service at Ford Island—ensuring the legacy of those who served in World War II is preserved.  Hawaii News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service has issued a high surf warning for north and west shores starting today at noon until midday Monday as waves may reach up to 45 feet. Ocean safety officials urge residents to stay away from the water because strong currents and surging waves can impact coastal areas and roadways.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
  • First responders urged the public to stay out of the water as winter’s extra-large swell is expected to roll in today with waves reaching 30 to 40 feet on exposed north shores+Honolulu Ocean Safety said extra lifeguards will patrol the beaches from 7 a.m. until sunset and drivers should yield to rescue vehicles+officials recalled eight drownings from last winter.  Hawaii News Now

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Ward Village is hosting festive holiday events through the end of December. Attendees can join a music series on December 5th, 12th and 19th at South Shore Market's courtyard, celebrate on December 13th with hot cocoa and live music, and drop off gifts for keiki and seniors until December 8th.  Honolulu Magazine

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Kailua Surfriders won their first state crown by defeating the Kapaʻa Warriors in the Division I Championship Football game on November 28 in Mililani— the team kept the Warriors from reaching the end zone as they celebrated the historic win.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
  • Vermont beat Hawaii 73—67 on Friday at Stan Sheriff Center as Nikola Pried scored 18 points and led the Catamounts to a 5—2 record, ending Hawaii’s unbeaten run. The tournament continues Saturday with a noon game between Vermont and Santa Clara and a 2:30 p.m. matchup between Hawaii and Lindenwood.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
  • The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors defeated North Dakota Fighting Hawks 92-55 in an NCAA men’s basketball game on November 28th at Bankoh Arena — Stan Sheriff Center —.  Honolulu Star-Advertiser
  • Defensive end Jackie Johnson III returned to Manoa after two years in the Midwest—he worked his way into a starting role for the Warriors and has tied for second-most sacks in the Mountain West with seven, and he is ready to help his team later today.
