COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Honolulu held a holiday celebration on Saturday as keiki received gifts and enjoyed a festive atmosphere. A cold front will bring flash flooding to Oahu and low-lying areas through late Monday night, so residents should monitor local forecasts.  KITV
  • A community garden at UH Manoa is unveiling new accessible features funded by an AARP Hawaiʻi grant; officials say the upgrades will improve access and foster inclusion on campus.  KITV
  • The Mele Kalikimaka Marketplace returns to Blaisdell Center today, offering nearly 300 booths of Hawaii-made treasures for Honolulu residents to browse local gifts.  KITV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Island News reporter Kimber Collins earned the Miss Scuba International honor by representing Hawai’i and the U.S. in Malaysia to promote marine conservation and cultural exchange using the pageant as a global platform.  KITV
  • Next Saturday, the Hawaiʻi State Archives will host Sakada Day to honor the first Filipino migrant workers with a special photo collection. Honorary Archivist Arman Tablo selected images that highlight their legacy in our community.  KITV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Heʻeia Fishpond restoration reached a 25-year milestone when hundreds of volunteers completed the kuapā at the historic fishpond (a key local project).  KITV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • University leaders and MKSOA officials revealed that two telescopes have stopped paying rent on Mauna Kea + a $500M upgrade project was cancelled due to unstable lease terms. They said stalled renewals and board exchanges may discourage future investment.  Hawaii Free Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Chamber of Commerce Hawaii is accepting applications for 2025 Public Health Fund grants to support community wellness programs in Honolulu.  Hawaii News Now
  • Researchers from the University of Hawaiʻi and the Department of Health found that life expectancy in Hawaiʻi dropped from 82.1 years before COVID to 80.7 in 2021, recovering partially later. The study shows high vaccination rates & early public health actions helped limit the decline compared to the national average.  Hawaii Free Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • At the Honolulu Marathon today, Tsegay Weldlibanos became the first man to finish in 2:14:28 while Calli Hauger-Thackery finished in 2:30:43 as thousands continue running along the course.  KITV
